2008 Toyota Prius Fuel Gauge Calibration Procedure Download

Posted on  by

Mar 02, 2010  I recently bought a used 2005 Toyota Prius and I've noticed that the fuel gauge will get really low, really fast. I'll usually get about 200 miles before the gauge shows less than 1/4 tank of gas left. But when I go to the gas station to fill up, the tank will only need 3-4 gallons to bring the gauge back up to full. (The manual says my tank should hold around 12 gallons.). Jan 14, 2015  My question is. I've read a lot about this issue and it seems to be pretty similar to those who try the Fuel Gauge Calibration. I'm confident that I can do this accurately and do think that it could help, but I'm not entirely savvy with cars. So, is there any reason not to try this? Or, is this something else? Some fuel gauges have an analog display while others have a digital or liquid crystal display. Electronic and software malfunctions may cause the fuel gauge in your automobile to inaccurately measure or display the amount of fuel remaining in the gas tank. If this happens, reset your fuel gauge.

The fuel gauge for my 2008 toyoto Prius recently became inaccurate and it was determined defective according to the toyoto dealership, which required me to spend $1,115 to have it and its gas tank replaced. I wrote toyoto on June 24, 2017 asking that they reimburse me for the defect. When they failed to respond I called toyoto customer experience center, who told me that they would not reimburse me because the defect was 'out of warranty' and there had been 'no recalls.' Please investigate and order toyoto to conduct a recall and reimburse its owners. Inaccurate defective Prius fuel gauges appears to be a widespread problem, with repairpal.com reporting 119 complaints. And in the past the NHTSA has determined that inaccurate fuel gauges is a safety issue since 'it may result in the vehicle unexpectedly running out of fuel and stalling, increasing the risk of a crash.'

I normally get about 450 miles out of one 11.9 gallon tank. Recently, I discovered my fuel gauge light going off at 300 miles. When I filled up my tank it only took 7 gallons, leaving 5 gallons that should have been in the tank. After filling it up, fuel gauge light went off just below 300 miles. When I took my vehicle in for an oil change I asked about it thinking there was something wrong with my fuel sensor. I was advised by the clerk that it was the bladder, and to just keep it full-thats all. He gave other advise like make sure the tire pressure on my tires were good (they were rotated and checked a week prior to this), and to check my air filter. Now I am confused, and do not know how much fuel is actually in my tank. I have had my vehicle for 3 1/2 years and never had a problem till now.

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. While driving approximately 70 mph the vehicle stalled. The contact stated the fuel system warning light illuminated immediately before the vehicle stalled. The contact also stated the owner's manual indicated that when the fuel system warning light illuminated the vehicle should have had at least 3 gallons of fuel left. A tow truck appeared on the scene to deliver more fuel to the contact. The vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed and was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 33,000.

2008 Toyota Prius: Refueling started to become a problem at 35,000 miles. Tank would not refill completely and gas is 'burped' out tank. Very frustrating refueling because gas hose clicks off repeatedly even though tank is not full. Typically tank will take an additional 2 gallons of fuel after the first time it clicks 'full'. it takes 5 minutes to put in last 2 gallons and then fuel bubbles up and pours out of tank. I could see the air bubbles working their way to the surface as the gas tank burps out the fuel. The bladder gas tank is clearly defective and it is impossible to know when tank is full. Michael's Toyota of bellevue, Washington has been worthless - first telling me they aren't aware of this issue and they had no problem refilling the car and the last time telling me there is nothing they can do and I should call Toyota. Great customer service.. thanks heavens the car is out of warranty because I have no interest in doing further business with them. Toyota should acknowledge this defect and replace the bladder gas tank with a regular version.

I took the car back to dealership on 7/29/10 because the inside cabin smells like gas after the car is turned on for about 5 minutes. Dealership confirmed that it did smell like gas and it was dangerous to drive. Currently Toyota is looking at cause of problem. I fear this car might be a dangerous combination of high power voltage and gas fumes. Vehicle was not properly inspected and sold in a dangerous condition. Dealership I purchased from is longo Toyota located in el monte, ca.

On 31 December 2009 my 08 Prius was slowed down prior to turning into a driveway, when it suddenly accelerated. It went out of control and crashed into trees and a powerpole. The floor mat, that according to Toyota is supposed to cause this, was properly attached to the pegs in the floor, and in proper place even after the crash recently, on 6 April, 2010, I again experienced a sudden unexplained acceleration when going about 5/10 miles per hour. It lasted about four seconds and did not result in an accident.

The fuel gauge on my Prius registered 3 gallon fuel remaining (according to the owners' manual). I ran out of fuel on a busy expressway without warning. Fortunately, I was not hit. I was towed to a Toyota dealership who informed me that the Prius gas tank is a plastic bag and the fuel gauge does not register correctly. I asked what Toyota was doing about this. I was told that they were 'looking into it'. that was more than one year ago. The Toyota dealership told me to keep the gas tank 1/2 full in order to prevent my Prius from running out of fuel. Of course, this cuts the vehicle range in half. I assumed that Toyota would work for a solution, but frankly, after all the recent revelations, I wonder if Toyota has looked for a solution. At the very least, Toyota should inform all Prius owners to keep their gas tanks 1/2 full in order to avoid the potentially dangerous event that I experienced. Toyota Prius, 2008, involved in accident, August 13, 2009 when it accelerated rapidly out of control after being at a stop sign for 4 minutes stopped in a line of traffic, hitting car in front and being very difficult to bring to a stop. Went from 0 to 45 mph very quickly and hard to stop.Toyota has not responded to complaint or my insistence that it be fixed. Was deemed by judge who heard the appeal of ticket to be a mechanical failure. First accident for me in 48.5 years of driving. Initially I thought it was brake failure, but after the info came out, it matches exactly the accelerator sticking that has been described. Filed complaint with Toyota in October and have not heard back. Haven was the contact, claim number at Toyota is #0910145720. Also notified dealer where it was purchased and have not heard from them. Was assured I'd hear in January and got a letter indicating that I should take the floor mat out. It happened again in November of 2009, although I immediately recognized it and got the car stopped quickly. I'm now afraid to drive it but need my car to work.

Over period of several weeks car would refuse to accept fuel. Stated capacity is over 11 gallons. Vehicle has never taken more than 9 gallons to fill up at an indicated empty point (1 bar on fuel gauge). Car would not accept fuel without burping fuel all over the side of the car and pavement surrounding. Each successive fill up would require less fuel before burping at fuel cutoff from pump. Toyota claimed that I had been doing to many MINIfill-ups (not intentionally since gauge was malfunctioning). Toyota dealership 'reset' fuel system early March 2009 and since has functioned properly. Believe Toyota (and us gov't Agency that approved this faulty system in the first place) should replace fuel system with version the europeans are using as I haven't seen any complaints in europe on this issue.

Prius

  • 2,500 miles
The first time this happened was approximately 3 weeks after purchasing my new '08 Prius. I was attempting to fill my nearly empty gas tank, when the gas nozzle clicked off after about 2 seconds of filling. I repeatedly tried to continue filling only to have the nozzle repeatedly click off without filling any further. I would squeeze the handle, a little gas would go into the car and the nozzle would click off. After about 5 minutes of this frustration, I removed the nozzle from the car and whatever gasoline was in the tank came gushing out of the gas tank. A lot of gas, poured down the side of my new car and onto myself. After this, the gas gauge was apparently stuck on 'full?, as I drove the car a about 100 miles and the gas gauge remained at the ?full? setting even though I had not even put in 3 gallons of gas in my seemingly empty tank. With most every subsequent fill after this it would take forever to fill the tank with the nozzle constantly clicking off?plus it is difficult to tell when the tank is actually full. The gas has continued to pour out onto my car and myself on occasional fills over the course of the last 5 months. I've put 16,000 miles on my Prius and it has most always been the same routine when fueling'the nozzle constantly clicking off and me standing there squeezing the nozzle handle over and over and trying to guess when the tank is actually full. I often could not put more than one second of fuel in my Prius before the fuel nozzle would click off and I keep having to pull the pump spigot out until it just barely squirts gas past the little flapper door, and even then it keeps shutting off. It takes me almost 20 minutes to put less than 6 gallons of gas in this car and it is an environmental and a safety concern to continue having gas pour out of the tank to the ground and onto my clothing/body. Toyota will not remedy this problem and it is both an environmental and safety concern to myself and others. There is documentation since 2004.

The gas gauge of my Toyota Prius 2007 is defective and has created a very dangerous situation. I first noticed this about a month ago. The tank was empty, I put a few gallons of gas in the tank and it did not register at all. The gauge still said empty. The next time I filled the tank, it seemed to be working properly. Then, on January 16th, I had a tank that was nearly empty. I had been driving for an hour or so when I noticed that the gas gauge spontaneously went from almost empty to full. This creates an extremely dangerous situation since the gauge is not accurate. There will be no warning before we run out of gas. If this should happen on a highway, it could easily be fatal. Slowing down without warning is as dangerous as accelerating without warning. Toyota must be held accountable for this defect. They will 'recalibrate' the gauge at a cost of $180/hour to me. This is not a satisfactory response to a safety issue. This is a known problem with these cars and Toyota needs to provide all Prius owners with reliable gas gauges. Thank you.

Ran out of gas in an '07 Honda Prius. Emergency vehicle supplied 2 gallons and we went on our way. Two tanks of gas later following a regular service visit to dealer, I ran out again just minutes after leaving service while the gauge indicated that I should have about 3 gallons remaining. I coasted into a station and put 2 gallons in tank. Car started but only died after several tries. Towed back to dealer. They reported the car was out of gas. I told them I'd already added gas. They put in 5 gallons and said the gauge indicated 'full.' 3+2+5 does not equal the 11.9 gallons that the tank is supposed to hold. These cars feature a bladder tank which is monitored by computer and if the computer decides that the tank is empty, it will shut the car down. This is not a safe situation under any circumstances. The dealer, picked up the towing expense, the cost of a temporary rental and the cost of the 5 gallons of gas. They refused to explore the problem further and said we might need a to replace some part of the fuel monitor system. Could it be that the bladder tank will not fully recover if a driver runs the car out of gas?

I own a Toyota Prius 2007 which it was performing excellent until 3 months ago that the fuel economic went down dramatically to half of it'S usually fuel consumption an average now I getting around 200 miles for tank when I use to get at least 400 per tank now that's it is a big difference. I was thinking on contact the Toyota dealer but my car it is been out of the warranty because it only have 3years or 36,000 miles so I am afraid they want to charge me for checking my car it is very suspicious that I start w/ this issue after my warranty expire besides that the car it is working excellent but I pay a lot more to save on gas an now it is performing like any regular because the most mileage I am getting now it is 35 miles per gallon.very disappoint about this and hope you guys look into this issue because it is very serious.

Gas tank will not fill up fully. Any auto shutoff gas pump will start shutting off with about 1.5 gallons to go. If I dribble gas in a lowest possible delivery, we can fill it up, but it takes about ten minutes, and then it often will regurgitate gas when it is full. We have complained to dealer several times. They say this is normal due to bladder in gas tank. We think this is a defect, that it does not allow us to get full range of tank on a trip. Our previous Prius from 2005 did not have this same problem. Dealer will not address the problem further.

On a 2007 Prius gas gauge showed 2 bars and was driving across a bridge in California when the gas engine stopped. Looked at the gas gauge and it still showed 2 bars. Was fortunate enough to be on a section of the bridge with a breakdown lane. 1/2 mile further on and we would have been stuck in one of the traffic lanes. The vsc, check engine, and hybrid system failure indicators where on - but not the low fuel!!! got towed to a dealer. Service manager told us that the car was out of gas and that the 'gas gauge was stuck' that's why it didn't show empty. He blamed it on the bladder design of the fuel tank and said it was 'a design defect' that Toyota new about. This is a significant safety issue - we could have been killed.

Indicator lights flashed. Malfunction indicator lamp stayed on. At 2,644 miles, 12 V. battery dead & replaced. I was told to keep the gas tank half or a quarter full or the reserve gas tank would cause the car to run on battery. The battery might have died because the car sat too long before it was sold/at 8,879 miles, I went in. After filling the gas tank & taking out the nozzle, gas spewed & bubbled out. The car stalled while driving slowly & while in park. Indicator lights flashed. The malfunction indicator lamp and master warning lights stayed on. It took 5 min. To turn off the car. I started the car. Those lights stayed on. I was told I left the 'trunk door' open & ran down the battery. (not true.) there is a gasket around the access hole and if a person 'is a little bit off, ' the gas will regurgitate. (I was not ' off' & did not top off the tank.) they reprogrammed the computer. The gas tank had not been filled so I knew they did not fill the gas tank and try to recreate the situation as they said they would. I bought gas at a different pump. I stopped at a stop light. I could feel a loss of power in the car. When I pushed the gas pedal, the car would not move. I turned the car off and on 3 times before it would move. It crept slowly through the intersection as the traffic signal turned red. I took the car in at 8,936 miles. I was told if my problem is associated with the battery that was taken out of my car, it is not at repair person's responsibility because he did not touch my battery. When a battery is disconnected for a certain amount of time, if something is not reset, it could cause problems. Then, he said no trouble found/my car stalled and/or had a loss of power. I took it in at 9,014 miles. No trouble found. I was told that my problems could have been caused by a faulty gas pump overfilling my tank. The gas station is new. The manager said the pumps were inspected. If there were a faulty pump, everyone would have problems.
