Hi all,
Have been umm and rrring a lot recently about selling my M5 but having given it a bloody good blast the other day i've decided - 'what the hell am i going to replace it with without spending stupid money'. So instead i thought i would spend a bit on it to making how i want it. Things like upgrade the small sat nav to the big screen, have it remapped, overhaul the suspension with some fresh OEM stuff and then try and get a bit more of the V8 sound out that its always lacked.
I've always thought it was a little too muted for a 400 bhp V8 especially as mine has the double glazing. Don't get me wrong i dont want to park up in McDonalds with a load of chavs and have an 'exhaust off'! But i would kind of like it to sound more fruity.
Just tonight i've seen someone selling a dark grey E39 M5 on Pistonheads - looked a nice, clean, standard car. Although it said it had bespoke exhaust work done and had a link to the M5 board to explain about it. Basically the car i think has had its four back boxes removed and has four straight pipes running back from the four tips into the resonator near the diff. Obviously this method i'd imagine would be a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new exhaust and would give the sound that i'm looking for. But then come MOT time does anyone know how this is going to effect the emissions and actually passing the test?
Thanks in advance
Andy

Similar situation myself Andy, I need the car for work as well as play so it has to be acceptable but at the same time want more noise sometimes.
I considered opening up two of the four boxes. Interested to see how you get on, my main fear is ballsing it up and ending up with a noise I dont like and cant change!

All you really need to do is remove the mufflers. That won't affect emisions but liberates the growl when you want it, without droning on the motorway.
Mine is 'on the todo list' for 2011

If I still had mine I would have carried out the 'muffler-delete' without question. I would have also contacted Evolve and had the Alpha-N, remap, limiter removal, sport memory etc. carried out. Awesome value for money and can be DIYd on your own laptop..

I upgraded the Zaust on my RX8 and thought that I would do the same when I got the M5 but I do use it as a family car and have been worried about the drone at motorway speeds.
The cheapest option seems to be cutting the boxes out and installing straight through pipes. The Haywood and Scott system are straight through and have the boxes built round them for show. The only problem with this is if you want to reverse the install. There has been some chat about it here

The muffler delete was the first thing I did when I bought mine - I did it within a week of purchasing the car. Doesn't cost much and makes a hell of a difference to the character of the car. Booms a bit from cold but within 5 mins, once it's warmed up, the boom is gone and you only notice the difference once you give it some beans Highly recommended. You can also do the mod so that the old back boxes can be bolted back on again - I think someone on the M5 board has done this.

What about electric cut-outs? More common on American V8's but it gives you the best of both worlds.

Hiya,
Yes, for a simple, relatively cost effective and purposeful modification, then definitley consider this 'Straight Through Pipes' conversion on the exhaust. If you then decide you need more, then you can consider the tried and tested options from the likes of Eisenmann, Magnaflow, SuperSprint etc etc.
As briefly mentioned, the M5board has eveything about the modifying of M5's covered. Read up on everything and evaluate what you'd like for your car. A Re-map on these cars isn't really worth it as it won't really liberate much more power. For immediately noticeable and performing power upgrades you'll be looking to spend quite a bit more as modifying the M5 isn't cheap!
Cosmetic and interior upgrades are relatively easily done as well, and you'll see lots of examples where things like that have been done.
Brakes, suspension, wheels, short shift gear changes and other engine mods are also fully covered on that site
One day, I WILL have an E39 M5 to sit alongside my E39 Touring !
Cheers, Dennis!

I had a Tubi system fitted to my e60 M5 and it was fantastic. I know the V10 and V8 are not the same but the system made a massive difference to the sound of mine.

To translate American into English,
The 'resonator' is the centre silencer. This does a little when removed but wont raise the volume a great deal.
The 'mufflers' are the back boxes.

Anyone got any ideas on what the rear silencer deletion and straight through pipes would cost to do. Or know of anyone that has done it. eg. recommended custom exhaust places?
Cheers for all the replies too.

SuperSprint does a X-pipe to replace the centre silencers. Have a look on YouTube for a sound bite - quite aggressive when you are on it.
Thursday 13th January 2011
Yeah seen a few with the x pipe, would that be too loud coupled with straight pipes out the back though?
Thursday 13th January 2011
I think it would be loud, so would start with x pipe first and then rear boxes later if you want it louder. Or go straight for some Eisenmann Sport rear boxes.. ;-)

Bmw E39 Upgrades
Saturday 15th January 2011
Rang a place called Custom Chrome in Warwickshire today for a quote about doing the back box deletion from the central silencers back. He said they could do an stainless straight pipes in the same style as the factory setup for just under £500 all in. Does this sound resonable. Is it going to be worth keeping the cut off back boxes too?
Sunday 16th January 2011
Just another quick one, is there anyone with a photo of the underneath of there M5 after the back boxes have been taken off with the some striaght pipes from the centre?
Cheers

£500 does seem a lot. I was quoted the following by MIJ (there are loads of pictures of systems on the M5 Board too
The dual exit rear section in stainless steel ( pipe work only ) you've requested for your BMW M5 will cost £244.99 this is fully inclusive of fuel discount (£25), vat & fitting. I've included 2 x twin round tailpipes in the quotation, you can choose an alternative or upgrade (various twin tailpipes etc.) from our extensive range of 40 tailpipes if you wish.
We carry all the necessary parts needed to build your exhaust system instore, so it should take no longer than 1 - 2 hrs to build & fit the system.
If you choose to wait with your car, we have a customer lounge with refreshments, SKY TV/DVD & internet access. We're only a few minutes walk from the city centre if you decide to go shopping etc. while we work on your car.
As your system will be custom built, you can tell us how you would like it sound, anywhere from quiet to full sport. Our most popular choice is a Mid-Sport, this gives the best of both worlds, not intrusive but achieves the sporty sound you want from your car upon applying the throttle
